Principality of Cavasson

Overview
Cavasson is a semi-autonomous principality located on the eastern coast of Ferrencia Island, along the rocky inlets and deepwater harbors of the Azure Floe. A nation is known for its shipyards, woodcraft, and maritime character. Cavasson occupies a vital trade route between the Azure Floe, Shiver and Farwater Seas.
Geography
Cavasson spans a varied landscape that includes forested highlands, mineral-rich foothills, and a craggy coastline dotted with natural harbors. Its southern and eastern shoreline faces the Azure Floe and Shiver Sea, and the interior rises gently into the wooded uplands that supply its shipyards and wood craft industries.
Government
Cavasson is a principality ruled nominally by a hereditary Prince, currently Prince Avelon III, whose authority is largely ceremonial. Real power lies with the General Council, a governing body composed of the heads of the five major guilds:
Shipwrights’ Concord
Brotherhood of Fishermen and Mariners
League of Timberwrights
Miners’ Syndic
Merchant Assembly
The Mestre or guild leaders appoint a Councilor that administer the government. These guilds manage taxes, trade policy, defense logistics, and foreign relations, often in tension with the Prince’s court. The system fosters pragmatism but frequently leads to political gridlock and factional rivalries.
Ponterra can interject into the domestic affairs of Cavasson at anytime they see fit.
Economy
Cavasson’s economy is robust, relying on marine and forest resources:
Shipbuilding: Velcria and Scarravelle produce some of the finest vessels on the Azure Floe.
Fishing & Salt Trade: Fish, especially deep-sea silverfin, is exported in bulk. Salted fish and kelp are traded inland.
Woodcraft: Skilled carpenters and joiners build and export finely worked beams, furniture, and hull components.
Light Mining: Cavasson exports copper, iron, and slate in moderate quantities. They also operate smelters and foundries.
Maritime trade, including ship leasing and cargo freight, accounts for much of the principality's external income.
Religion and Culture
The dominant faith in Cavasson is the Faith of the Twins, particularly strong in the rural areas and among the guild classes. However, the Sanctorian Church is gaining traction, especially among coastal nobility, soldiers, and imported clergy. A growing number of Sanctorian Sanctums now dot the coastal towns, and there is tension between the two religions.
Cavassonese culture is defined by:
Seafaring Pride: Naval exploits and ship lineage are points of local pride.
Guild Loyalty: Identity is shaped more by guild than by class or family name.
Seasonal Festivals: The Turning Tide Festival in spring and Echo Night in autumn honor the Twins and mark civic renewal.
Dual Aesthetic: Architecture and art often feature mirrored forms, spirals, or contrasting materials, in honor of the divine Twins.
Foreign Relations
Allies: High Realm of Borgravia and Archonate of Lyncanth
Neutral: Valsuer Sovereignty, Kingdom of Vonahr and Sherrani Commonwealth
Rivals: Grand Duchy of Ponterra
